Description[]
Jody Baxter lives with his parents, Ora and Ezra "Penny" Baxter, on a small farm in the animal-filled central Florida backwoods in the 1870s. He wants a pet and finds one in the deer, Flag. Together they deal with strained relationships, hunger, death of beloved friends, A bear attack, and the capriciousness of nature through a catastrophic flood. Later, Jody must face the difficult choice between his beloved deer or his family's well-being.
The book was adapted in a film in 1946 with Gregory Peck and Jane Wyman as Jody's parents.
