This is an account of what it was like to live in East Berlin before the Wall was taken down, seen through the eyes of a teenage girl. Much factual information is woven in with a human interest story. The book explains the real-life outworkings of different political systems very well.

  • Reading Age: 14+
  • Reading Aloud Age: 12 upwards if listener fairly mature and if parent is willing to discuss the issues raised as they go through the book together.

A sensitive child could be upset by the start of the book, as the heroine has to go to the police station to identify her mother's body. (The mother was shot by the authorities as she tried to escape to the West).
