The last four gnomes in Britain live by a bubbling brook on the banks of the river Folly.
The gnomes are perfectly happy with their life, hidden away from human eyes and ears, with the beasts and birds their friends, save one - Cloudberry. Restless and longing for adventure, Cloudberry sets off to follow his dream - a long, dangerous and perilous journey up the Folly to find the river's source. But when he doesn't return, the remaining gnomes begin the same journey to find him.
An excellent book, for its quaint adventure, and marvellous adventure. The only bit I have a problem with is a bit in the middle of the book where the "God" Pan comes to see them. This marred an otherwise excellent story.

The "god" Pan comes. He is portrayed basically like he is in mythology - pipes and all. Doesn't stay long, but is portrayed as completely real.
