Description[]

The Help is a historical fiction novel, written by American author Kathryn Stockett, and published in 2009. It is about three women in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1962: Skeeter, Minny Jackson, and Aibileen. Skeeter is an educated white woman who wants to be a writer. Minny is a colored maid who has trouble getting jobs because of her 'sass.' Aibileen is an older maid who is taking care of her seventeenth white child while trying to get over the death of her son, Treelore. When Skeeter gets the idea to write a book of interviews about the reality of being a colored maid, she asks Minny and Aibileen to help. When they agree, albeit reluctantly, she discovers a whole new side of racism: the one no ever cared to look at before. These three women are willing to do whatever it takes in order to have the book published, no matter what the consequences are...

Reader's Reviews[]

I loved this book. It was well written and I was left thinking about it even after I stopped reading. It was thought-provoking and sentimental, but there were also some humorous scenes.

This book was full of the consequences of doing the right thing even when the rest of the world disagrees. However, Skeeter lies to her mother and friends in order to protect the maids she is interviewing. There is also some profanity and different characters drink and smoke throughout the book. There is some imagery of the aftermath of a severe beating Minny receives from her husband and in one scene a nude man shows up in the front yard of a character.
