Description[]
The Books of Ember is a science fiction-fantasy novel series, written by Jeanne DuPrau.[1] The series started with The City of Ember, published in 2003. The novel was very successful, and was later made into a film in 2008.[2] The series was continued with the publication of The People of Sparks, in 2004, which continued the story of The City of Ember. The third novel to be published in the series, in 2006, was The Prophet of Yonwood, which forms a prequel to the other novels in the series. The Diamond of Darkhold is the fourth novel in the series, and was published in 2008. It continues the story of The City of Ember and The People of Sparks. The Diamond of Darkhold is, according to the author, the last novel in the series.[3]
The City of Ember, The People of Sparks and The Diamond of Darkhold all take place in a post-apocalyptic world. They revolve around the people who live in the city of Ember, the last known human settlement in a pitch black world.
Reader's Reviews[]
1[]
My review of the series is really mixed. The City of Ember and The People of Sparks are both fantastic – moral, fascinating, and with some really thought-provoking themes, let alone they are a great adventure story. In fact, they are two of my all-time favourite novels! The Prophet of Yonwood was a total disappointment. It was poor, never got going, and my opinion of the series was brought down quite a lot. The Diamond of Darkhold was reasonable, but just failed to be as good as the first two. My recommendation is that you simply must read The City of Ember and The People of Sparks. Skip The Prophet of Yonwood totally, and you might want to read The Diamond of Darkhold. Unfortunately, it's a case of the author carrying on the series too long.
