Lullabyhullaballoo! is a beautifully illustrated children’s book that follows a little princess as she tries to get to sleep but is kept awake by various creatures outside of her castle. Each creature makes a noise that is described by some brilliantly unusual verbs and at the end of each page children can join in with telling the creatures to “SSSH”. The page then folds out to reveal another illustration and the creature asks “Who, me?” and again children can join in by saying “YES, YOU!”. This repeats for a while with different creatures until the princess starts crying and so the creatures all decide to sing “Lullabyhullaballoo” to her and she drifts off to sleep. The book ends with a humorous twist as the little princess starts snoring and the creatures can’t get to sleep!
Lullabyhullaballoo! received a British Book Award for best illustrated book and it is easy to see why, with beautiful, bold and entertaining images on every page. The illustrations help children to imagine the noises going on and having the pages fold out means there is a surprise within every page.
This book would be most suitable for ages 3-7 as they can engage with the book through the illustrations and the repetition of phrases that allows them to join in and speak the words too.
Overall, this book would make a fabulous addition to any childs bookshelf or a KS1 classroom.
