Description[]

Little Women, also sometimes known as Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, is a novel written by Louisa M. Alcott. The original book was published in 1868, and was an immediate success. A sequel was published a year later, entitled Good Wives. Both parts were published as one volume in 1880, and have been published as one volume in the United States ever since (although in other countries the book is still sometimes published in two parts). Consequently, the book is now known as a single work, Little Women, and Good Wives is no longer considered a sequel. Alcott did go on to write two sequels, however: Little Men and Jo's Boys. Little Women has been adapted for play, musical, opera and many films.

The novel follows the story of four sisters – Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy – and is loosely based on the author's life with her three sisters. They are aged 16, 15, 13 and 12. The story is set during the American Civil War, and tells the story of the sisters' adventures and life as they grow up.

Reader's Reviews[]

A very good book. I enjoyed it immensely. (Olivia, age 13)

2[]

Little Women is reportedly considered "chick lit" in Britain (and possibly in the United States too), but is perceived somewhat differently outside the English speaking world. "Chick literature" or not, this book is great: it's funny, it's entertaining, it feels fresh, it's captivating. I really enjoyed reading about the tales of the Jo and the rest of the March sisters (and I am a guy). If you enjoyed this book, then I can recommend this Episode of the T.V. show Friends where it is featured prominently (some parental guidance may be required). -- Shlomi Fish
