Description[]

The history of the Normans began a long time before 1066. One of the most successful warrior tribes of the Dark Ages, the "Norseman" eventually came to dominate Europe from the Baltic sea to the island of Sicily and the borders of Eastern Europe. As Viking raiders in the eighth century, the Normans not only changed the landscape and culture of Europe but were themselves changed by their new conquests. In this Brief History, historian Francois Neveux sheds light on the forgotten origins of England's conquers – and their conquests of both England and Sicily.

Reader's Reviews[]

1[]

A fascinating read. For me, it was particularly interesting, as it is written from a Frenchman's point of view, which is very different to the various English perspectives on the Normans that I have read. It also told me a good part of history I didn't know about the Normans – including their conquest of Sicily.
